Throwback Thursdays: Rene & Angela

I loved this group back in the day! They had several songs that will always be my favorites. But I think they are one of those groups from the 80s that folks tend to forget about. Here are some of my favorite songs from Rene & Angela:

Your Smile

You Don’t Have to Cry

My First Love

I Love You More

Do you remember Rene & Angela? Do you have any favorite songs by them? Are there any other groups from the 80s that you love that folks don’t really mention a lot anymore?

much love and peace,

Gwyneth

My favorite by them was Your Smile. Angela Winbush later married and divorced Ron Isley, but does anyone know whatever happened to Rene?

Bettye ~ “You Smile” is one of my all-time favorites from them. I couldn’t post it because You Tube didn’t let me but I linked to it. I knew that Angela Winbush had been married to Ron Isley. I have no idea what happened to Rene… I might have to do some goggling to find out…

I loved this group. She recently won a battle with ovarian cancer. Never hear anything about Rene though.

As far as other groups, and you’ll have to forgive me re: time periods, what about Klymaxx?

And what about The Jones Girls? I am always fascinated by girl bands, i.e. women who not only sing but are also instrumentalists.

Patricia ~ Klymaxx is definitely 80s. That was a powerful girl group! I think I remember seeing a special on them on VH1. It was one of those whatever happened to them shows and they got the group back together, etc. I remember they had a lot of strife and inner turmoil with folks not wanting to reunite and perform together and one of them had gotten another group of women together and was using the name… in a word… drama! Anyway, I loved them too… “Meeting in the Ladies Room” and “I Miss You” were two of my favorite songs by Klymaxx.

Patricia ~ The Jones Girls was another great group! I loved “You Gonna Make Me Love Somebody Else” “Who Can I Run to” and “I Just Love the Man” to name only a few of their songs. I thing one of the sisters passed away.

Your Smile is on my mp3 player right now, and several of Klymaxx’s songs are on there as well. I have to go find some of the Jones Girls. Didn’t another group re-do “Who Can I Run to?” I think it was Xscape.

Yeah! Rene & Angela were superb for the short time that they spent together. My favorite songs by them are MY FIRST LOVE and YOUR SMILE, both written by Angela Winbush – who in my opinion doesn’t get credit for her penchant for the lyrical content in her expertise. Unfortunately, a well-publicized spat between them concerning royalties and residual money forced them to go separate ways. The rift remains today. Rene tried to resurface with an album but it bombed. He’s now traveling the oldies circuit, but is hampered because he’s not permitted to perform any of the songs that were made during his tenure with Angela. This was due to a lawsuit that precipitated the bad blood between them.

Of course, you know that Angela went on to a successful solo career after marrying Ron Isley. Check out her first two solo albums (er, I mean CD’s) and witness this Songbird of the South! Ya’ll talkin’ ’bout those groups from the 80’s like Klymaxx, The Jones Girls, et al, but the sensational mid to late 70’s were no slouch! What about LAKESIDE, CONFUNKSHUN, ATLANTIC STARR, MIDNIGHT STAR , and SURFACE just to name a few…

Shelia ~ Yep… Xscape did a remake of “Who Can I Run To?” I love both versions. I just love the song.

Alvin ~ Thanks for giving us the 411 on the Rene & Angela. It’s sad that so much drama happens with such great groups and folks end up splitting and stop making great music. You are a music lover I can relate to though, Alvin! ;-) You have listed some of my favorite groups, groups that will probably show up on Throwback Thursday soon. You have my all time favorite Atlantic Starr! I loved that group. My favorite song by them is Silver Shadow. I had to be between 12-14 can’t remember, but every time that song came on I sang along. It’s such an inspirational song. To show how much I loved this group, here is a small list of some of my favorite songs by them:

    Silver Shadow
    Circles
    Touch a Four Leaf Clover
If Your Heart Isn’t In It
    Send for Me
    Always
    Secret Lovers
